People have said to me that they didn’t think we need to know God better. They think that when they become Christians, they are perfect already. I met one young woman who thought exactly that way. She was wrong, according to the Bible. How can we grow to be more like Jesus?
On the one hand, the Bible says clearly that when people trust in Jesus as the only Pathway to heaven, God the Judge declares them not-guilty and right with him. However, those terms are legal ones. That is, though we are fully guilty before the Judge of the universe, he makes the pronouncement that we are guilt-free because Jesus took our guilty verdict on himself in our place to make us not-guilty and legally right with him.
On the other hand, the actual presence of many imperfections remains in what the Bible calls our sinful nature or flesh. God cannot let us into his perfect place if we aren’t perfect. As a result, since we don’t know God enough, we need to grow to know him better in this life. For example, in Ephesians 4, the Apostle Paul describes the Christian life as starting out like a spiritual baby being tossed around on a choppy sea.
Then, we must grow up like a baby growing into an adult to become mature and stable in our Christian lives. Those changes must happen in our emotions, decisions, and thoughts. When I became a Christian, first, God changed my thinking to become convinced that Jesus rose from the dead. Second, I decided not to become a pastor, which was God’s will; he corrected me. Third, God healed my emotions of anger and anxiety. If you want to find out more, you can read my autobiography, What God Has Done: My True God-Biography .
However, I’m still far from perfect in my everyday life because my sinful nature or flesh is still self-centered in some ways. We all have a long way to go on the highway to heaven, which Jesus cleared and paved for us. He wants us to become mature instead of being spiritual babies, to become a little like the following gentleman:
Of course, when we die as true believers in Jesus, our souls become perfect. Then, when Jesus returns, our bodies will be raised from the dead and transformed into perfect bodies to be rejoined with our souls in order to live in a perfect universe forever. What are your thoughts?
